In 1920, the Comte de Milléant dreamt of creating the most spectacular casino on the Riviera. This casino nestling on the Basse Corniche road between Nice and Monaco never saw the light of day as the massive landscaping work and the creation of the Palais de la Méditerranée's casino on the Promenade des Anglais soaked up the aristocrat's considerable fortune. In 1930, the property was purchased at a candle auction by Count Maurice Maeterlinck. Abandoning the green velvet of the casino so dear to his predecessor, he instead built a superb residence which he named "Villa Orlamonde". All of the great names from the economic, political and artistic circles of the day rubbed shoulders here during some of the finest parties the Riviera had to offer. Following Maeterlinck's death in 1949, his widow continued to enjoy a peaceful life here until her death, and did not change the sober decor characterised by its marble and lighting effects, so carefully crafted by her departed husband. The property was then largely forgotten, and suffered the ravages of time. During the 1980s a luxury property development programme saw the Villa Orlamonde being restored to its former glory, with the villa being converted into huge apartments. This included the completion of the long neglected landscaping work originally started during the failed casino project. It was in 1986 that a Swiss businessman, Henri Ferdinand Lavanchy (the founder of the Adia temping company) fell in love with this unique site and completed the final work required to convert the premises into a luxury hotel. The establishment opened its doors to a select clientele in April 1990. Today, this hotel surrounded by its 4 ha of grounds and gardens offers 12 bedrooms and 28 suites, ideally located on the rocky cliffs overlooking the headlands of Antibes and St Jean Cap Ferrat. |
